Executives, Monkeys, and Leadership

3 Habits That Can Change Your Potential

As a little girl, I was fascinated by a brass statue positioned on my father’s bookshelf. This statue was comprised of three monkeys sitting next to one another – one had his hands over his eyes, one with his hands over his mouth, and the third placing his hands over his ears.

My father explained that these three monkeys were called “the Wise Monkeys,” and represented the old saying, “See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil.” They were a reminder to conduct ourselves wisely and appropriately.

This sounded rather virtuous. I was satisfied with this explanation as one that was a directive as to how to be a good person. Indeed, I still believe this.

However, I later discovered that this same adage, teased out in modern application, is actually a hidden key to succeeding – or failing – in one’s leadership.

The three original wise monkeys, along with a later-emerging fourth, hold the key to succeeding – or failing – in one’s leadership growth.

Here’s a quick check-in to see where you might want to up-level the way you currently lead:

1. Mizaru – see no evil – or, use a better lens!

  • What are you reading or watching?

Everything you put into your brain influences your thought patterns and focus. Are you feeding your brain with material that educates and provokes to help you grow, or are you binge-watching B-roll or reading cheesy novels?

  • What assumptions do you make as you observe others?

Are you making assumptions of others based on partial information, or are you asking the question, “What else might be part of the picture that I do not see?”  Do the homework.

  • What lens do you use as you approach the world?

Are you stopping at the facts in front of you, or do you seek to make connections, using deeper-level thought processes? In other words, are you simply taking in facts without asking yourself how these facts affect you, others, and the world? Expanding your leadership means making these important connections.

 

2. Kikazaru – hear no evil – or, don’t listen to junk.

  • Do you quietly stew over past criticisms received?

High-performing leaders consider the source and either make necessary shifts to change, or discard the information as invalid and not useful. Stewing is repeating the same thoughts over and over again, and takes up valuable brain space. Stop stewing – do something about it.

  • Do you receive gratification from listening to gossip or bad news?

If you are, this is a bad sign that your leadership is predicated on seeing others’ failure as your success. If you think you are right all the time, you are wrong. And if others continue to tell you that you are always right, your leadership is either based on the fear of others, or you are working in an unhealthy, sub-par culture that allows this.

  • Do you consider your sources as you listen to what is happening in your organization, in the world?

I’m continuously shocked at how highly-intelligent professionals will make assumptions and decisions based on poor or impartial information. This has consequences. Enough said.

 

3. Iwazaru – speak no evil – or, stop the perpetuation of rubbish.

  • Who do you say you are to yourself?

What stories are you holding on to, that keep you from stepping into better leadership? Are you harboring any negative self-talk, no matter how seemingly insignificant? Are you secretly in a stagnant comfort zone because what has worked before should still continue to work now? Think, again. Things are changing rapidly, and continuing to work on your personal leadership is required to stay professionally viable.

  • How are you connecting with others through conversation?

Are you taking the time to connect personally to strengthen relationships and get things done? Or are you using e-mail and texting as quick fixes to move ahead? If you sense you are out of touch with your colleagues and reports, it’s time to re-establish connections through thoughtful, eye-to-eye conversations – the only way to establishing empathy and trust. Looking to better your relationships, influence and followership? This is the first step.

  • How are you using social media?

This may seem a superficial question for today’s topic, but it’s really key. What are you messaging? What are you sharing? What does this say about you? I recently began work with an executive preparing for a vice-presidential position in her company. Guess what I asked her to clean up first? That’s right. It was actually shocking to her to look back and see what she had “liked” and forwarded. What do your social media messages say about you?

 

4. Shizaru – do no evil – or, do good!

  • Your habits are what make or break you.

Which one is holding you back? Lack of exercise or balance? Procrastination? Avoiding conflict? Neglecting significant relationships? Take a careful assessment of your work and life and (1) ask where you could be further ahead; and (2) what you are doing that is keeping you from moving forward. You’ll identify the habit or behavior right there.

  • You are the composite of your current relationships and associations.

Take a survey. Who do you aspire to be? Get that image locked firmly in your mind. Then, ask yourself who the 5-10 people are, with whom you surround yourself (with whom you have the most contact)? Are these people “there” with where you want to be in morals, values, lifestyle, habits, and focus? What relationship needs to change, and when will it be important enough for you to make it so?

  • What legacy are you creating?

The way you lead and the work you contribute are no doubt positive. But when was the last time you really thought about this, and actually tried to measure the impact of your leadership and professional contributions? Select 1-2 trusted associates or mentors and ask the question. The answer may not be readily apparent in the initial conversation, but the exercise is really to help you refocus on the end goal. Five Wishes Every Talented Woman Wants For 2017

What do talented women want most for 2017? I don’t think you’ll be surprised when you see the short list below that I’ve compiled from my own clients and colleagues.

These wishes are probably yours, too.

What will you do in 2017 so that you make these wishes come true? The world is waiting for you.

Here are five statements from some of my clients and colleagues regarding their wishes for 2017:

  1. I want my work to count for something. It needs to make a difference, and I need to see and feel that difference so I know I am contributing. Mary S., executive vice president, banking
  2. This is the year I am finally going to go for it. I’m tired of waiting, of playing it small. What do I have to lose by risking? Not as much as I do if I remain where I am. Susan L., executive director, national non-profit
  3. I’m ready to do what it takes to make work fun. I’ve built this business from scratch, and it has been hard. I’ve sacrificed a lot. It’s time that I strike that life-work balance and put the fun and creativity back into what I do. Tamara N., vice president, wealth advisory firm

Are You a Bull in a China Shop?

5 Ways to Approach a Problem

My friend Dana (not her real name) prides herself on confronting problems head on.

“I used to be a pushover,” she says. “People trod all over me, and I just rolled over and allowed it. Not anymore!”

Unfortunately, people now describe Dana as a “bull in a china shop.”  She has developed quite an overtly aggressive stance that is now costing her relationships and opportunities.

When do you confront? And if you don’t, do you simply have to roll over and allow others to take advantage of you?

Knowing how to resolve a problem effectively requires some discernment. Where do you start?

Before jumping to a quick conclusion, ask yourself the following:

  1. Is the issue symptomatic of a larger root cause, or do you need to gather more information in order to make a best decision?

Your best approach is to avoid the problem until you have the information you need in order to correct it appropriately.

  1. Are you outmatched or losing ground on the issue? Or do you need to build goodwill by acceding to others, since the issue is more important to them than to you?

Your best approach is to accommodate others by allowing them to decide, even if what they choose is not your first choice.

  1. Do you need to reach long-range solutions?

Do you need to find an integrative solution so that all sides can come together to work more effectively? You will want to take a collaborative stance in problem-solving.

  1. Sometimes compromise is your best option.

When you need to settle complex issues temporarily or to reach quick solutions when you are under time pressure, compromise can be greatly beneficial.

  1. An aggressive stance can be necessary under certain circumstances.

I wish Dana had learned when to use this, rather than to adopt it as her default mode. But aggression is absolutely necessary in an emergency, or when issues are critical and you are absolutely sure you are right.

Knowing you have options in problem-solving approaches and learning to exercise these strengthens your ability to lead and influence others.

Before You Welcome 2017

A Brief Check-In For Women Who Lead

As a woman who leads, you have probably experienced a full and exciting year. You have no doubt also had to deal with some unusual experiences, which have demanded quite a bit of your time.

What this means is that you may have set some important goals aside in order to accomplish the essential.

My wish for you is that you do not close the door on 2016 with regrets…that you take a moment to reflect on the things that you have accomplished. Because all too often, we focus on the things we didn’t do, diminishing the importance of our successes.

And instead of feeling excited about 2017, you’ll feel like you are in “catch up” mode – not a healthy, strategic approach, or a good feeling.

Assessing your 2016 wins is critical to having the right lens to set your goals for 2017.

So before you welcome 2017, here’s a brief check-in…

Celebrating Your 2016 Wins and Successes

Find a quiet corner and hot cup of something good, take a pen and paper, and settle in to answer the following questions (it’s important to hand write this in order to connect your head and heart):

  1. What are you most proud of, as you look back at 2016? (This may be personal or business – but it would be great to list one for each.)
  1. List 3-5 wins in your work – accomplishments or moves forward.
  1. What one thing would you like to congratulate yourself for, which others may or may not have noticed?
  1. What values do these accomplishments reveal?
  1. What natural strengths did you use in order to accomplish these things?
  1. What event or circumstance in your life this year opened the door for you to recognize your power or influence your future choices?
  1. What did you do well in 2016 that you would like to do more of in 2017?
  1. What do you need to make sure that your goal-setting process for 2017 is an exciting and positive one – one that energizes and excites you?
  1. Knowing you have put some things aside in order to accomplish “the necessary,” what is one thing you would like to focus on in 2017 that will make a difference to your year?

Why Women Leaders Are Losing Their Jobs

3 Ways You Can Avoid This

Fortune Magazine’s December 13, 2016 blog, “The World’s Most Powerful Women,” reports that women business leaders around the world are losing ground.

“This year has been a doozy for supporters of gender equality and women’s advancement, even beyond Hillary Clinton’s defeat and Donald Trump’s victory.

  • Dilma Rousseff, Brazil’s first female president, was ousted from power, and
  • South Korea’s first female president, Park Geun-hye, now seems poised to meet that same fate.
  • The IMF’s first female chief, Christine Lagarde, is currently engulfed in a trial that could jeopardize her future.
  • The number of female CEOs in the Fortune 500 sank from 24 to 21.
  • And some bright, still rising business stars – Theranos’ Elizabeth Holmes, Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer – have plummeted like fireballs back to earth.”

The unfortunate consequence of these disappointing events is that because this is occurring on a larger, public scale, your brain is subconsciously telling the following story:

“Hey, You, women just can’t hack it. See what happens when a woman is placed in a position of leadership? Don’t try it. It doesn’t work. Be safe. Be warm. Stay where you are. Don’t try to reach higher goals. Don’t speak up. Don’t speak out.”

In fact, most all of these situations Forbes describes were avoidable – and that’s what your brain doesn’t stop to examine. The women mentioned in the Forbes blog have lost their positions for many reasons, and some are as follows:

  • poor decision-making, difficulties in taking action
  • not asking for help or an inability to listen
  • surrounding themselves with the wrong people
  • difficulty in building the influence they need to get support and get things done
  • staying too long in the same position when they should have made that next move or change

Of course, politics can sometimes derail. And, in at least one disappointing case, compromised ethics were at issue.

But for the most part, the plummets these female business leaders have taken were avoidable. And that’s just plain disappointing after all we’ve worked on to move forward.

So, how can you avoid the same kind of ending?

These recent events with other women of high visibility can hurt you and your future, if you are aspiring to greater leadership and larger opportunities.

The simple answer is to get the right kind of help to check you on your ability to lead and do it well. This involves a few things.

1. Be willing to examine your own leadership.

How well do you lead yourself – your emotions and the way you manage these, as well as your decision-making, action-taking, and more. Take an assessment, and review whether you are meeting goals effectively, if you have rock-solid confidence, and if your business or company recognizes your value.

2. Be willing to ask a few trusted colleagues and mentors where you need to grow.

How well are you leading others? How do you relate, build influence, and get things done with others? Take the basal temperature by getting sound feedback so you know what to work on. If you are great talent, but you can’t communicate this to others and influence them to take action, your leadership will stall here.

3. Get the right kind of help to grow your leadership in the right places, and through the right way.

Don’t be shy, and don’t short-change yourself. This is what kills most women leaders “in the making” – not asking for help, and not investing in the right kind. You must make the investment in yourself to course-correct and camp on your abilities so that these work for you, and work extremely well.
